COMORBIDITIES IN THE NICU AND BREASTFEEDING

  • Portland, Oregon United States (map)

Joshua McDowell Bio: Originally from New Mexico, USA I have been practicing Bilingual Speech Language Pathology for 13 years. I have worked in Acute Trauma 1 Pediatrics, NICU, Mother Baby Unit and Public School settings. I enjoy meeting up with family/friends, backpacking, hiking and canning.

Presentation: Pediatric feeding and swallowing issues are never found alone. Dysphagia is NEVER a primary diagnosis. There is always a reason for a feeding/swallowing issue in an infant/adult. Understanding the developing neonatal swallowing mechanism during their NICU stay in relation to infant cognitive development with the complications of the comorbidity which in return influences the behavior/character of an infant is key in understanding how to help in breastfeeding. The presentation will focus on understanding these issues above and why teamwork is always key.
